KOHLBERG HOUSE

Wellfleet, MA

Built in 1961 by the prolific local builder Luther Crowell, the Kholberg house and A-Frame cottage sit in the woods about one hundred yards from the dune’s edge. Abandoned for almost two decades within the Cape Cod National Seashore and restored by the Cape Cod Modernist house trust in 2019, the landscape design responds to the need to carve out space for access and utilities within the dense and changing woodland site.

The design is focused on management strategies to favor existing plant communities that are compatible with the restored structures. The resulting design is one that brings the beauty and wildness of the surrounding landscape back up to the home- while supporting the function of the home’s systems and adding biodiversity to this unique site.

Plant Communities

Trees and shrubs are excluded from areas adjacent to structures through annual mowing, maintaining existing beneficial perennials, grasses and sedges.

Planting

Areas disturbed by construction are replanted with native species to seamlessly integrate the structures with the surrounding landscape.
